By Janet Copeland and Maria MacNeil The liver transplant program in Halifax has always been an Atlantic Canadian program, caring for transplant recipients and families from the four Atlantic Provinces. Our first liver transplant took place here in 1985. Since that time there have more than 270 liver transplant surgeries done at this centre. Between 2001 and 2004, the surgical component of the liver transplant program moved to the London Health Sciences Centre, through a collaborative arrangement with the team there. Atlantic Canadians were listed on a separate waiting list in London, and organs that became available in Atlantic Canada were allocated to patients on that list. Patients traveled to London for a pre-transplant assessment, then returned for surgery and immediate post-transplant care. Throughout this time, teams in Halifax and London worked hard to make transplant care as seamless as possible for patients and families. This meant frequent contact to keep coordinators in London aware of the status of wait list patients, to facilitate travel arrangements, and to plan for transfer back to Halifax and their return home. Although patients received excellent care in London, it meant families had to go further from home, and made it more difficult for family and friends to support the recipients.
