Need Problem Definition Of the almost 100 million households in the United States, most require some form of space heating, which consumes over seven quadrillion Btus quads ; annually. The vast majority of this residential space heating energy is derived from non-renewable fuels. The fossil fuel industry has a well-developed infrastructure for the extraction, transportation, processing, distribution, and combustion of its fuels. The renewable fuel industry, by comparison, is highly fragmented with a number of small businesses which primarily serve local markets, and which have not been able to make comparable investments in research and infrastructure development. While fossil fuels are routinely and conveniently delivered to homes and businesses, biomass fuels are not. For the use of renewable biomass fuels to increase in this country, technological improvements are needed in fuel handling and delivery. Objective The objective of this poster session by the Pellet Fuels Institute PFI ; , is to show the potential of the bulk delivery ofbiomass pellet fuel on a regional basis. Two contributing factors to the relatively small number of homes in the United States that use pellet fuels for space heating are the difficulty of fuel handling and the lack of a developed bulk fuel delivery infrastructure. Homeowners today crave convenience. They want to turn up the thermostat and have heat happen. While reliable thermostatically controlled pellet stoves and furnaces are now available, the lack of an integrated fuel delivery, storage, and furnace feed system has hampered the growth of the biomass fuel industry. There are over 450, 000 pellet stoves and 4, 000 pellet furnaces in use in the United States. Presently, homeowners buy pellet fuels in 18 kg lb. ; plastic bags. In most space heating appliances, that translates into about 24 hours of heat. The bags are hauled from the retail establishment by the consumer, stored until needed, and carried to the stove or furnace for dumping into a feed hopper. Unlike with a gas or oil furnace, today's biomass pellet user needs to physically transport their fuel from a supplier, and personally insure the timely delivery of the fuel to the combustion unit. Bulk delivery and automatic feeding of fuel would save money and energy, as well as add to customer convenience. The homeowner would no longer have to lug his or her own fuel from the store to the stove, making bulk delivery technically superior to the existing system. Energy is wasted in the unnecessary packaging of the pellets, and the inefficiency of numerous vehicle trips by the consumer back and forth between the fuel pellet retailer and home. Cost savings will be realized in improving the transportation efficiencies and.

These aims are achieved in a book that is well edited with very little overlap between the chapters. When overlap does occur it serves to emphasize important points. In a practical subject it is very useful to have the authors' views on controversial issues and appropriate anaesthetic techniques. The considerable emphasis on follow-up of day-cases for audit purposes and to allow continued development of practice is also laudable. The use of boxes to summarize important points or useful practical advice works very well. There are one or two errors in the boxes but these are fairly obvious and should not cause confusion. However, the `overview' at the beginning of each chapter is much less useful because it differs very little from the summary and does not aid in the overall understanding of the subject. Patient selection, assessment and preparation are dealt with in Chapter 1 in a very practical and commonsense manner. Issues such as patient suitability, need for pre-operative investigations, and information given to patients are discussed. Chapter 2 covers the principles of general anaesthesia including the facilities required in a day unit and techniques for anaesthesia, airway management, uid therapy, and recovery. However, the author of this chapter has tried to cover too much and consequently some of it is dealt with supercially. For instance, it is recommended that neuromuscular blocking drugs should not usually be reversed without any reference to the potential problems of inadequate reversal. Inhalation and intravenous anaesthesia in day surgery are reviewed in separate chapters. The agents available, methods of administration and their advantages and disadvantages are detailed.
