Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, 221005, India] - CURR. MICROBIOL. 2006 53 4 ; - summ in ENGL Azospirillum brasilense is a nitrogen-fixing, root-colonizing bacterium that brings about plant-growth-promoting effects mainly because of its ability to produce phytohormones. Ethylenediamine EDA ; -resistant mutants of A. brasilense were isolated and screened for their higher ability to decrease acetylene and release ammonia in the medium. One of the mutants showed considerably higher levels of acetylene decrease and ammonia excretion. Nitrogenase activity of this mutant was relatively resistant to inhibition by NH4 Cl. Adenosine triphosphate ribosylation of dinitrogenase reductase in the mutant did not increase even in presence of 10 mM NH4 Cl. Although the mutant showed decreased glutamine synthetase GS ; activity, neither the levels of GS synthesized by the mutant nor the NH + -binding site in the GS differed from those of the parent. The 4 main reason for the release of ammonia by the mutant seems to be the fixation of higher levels of nitrogen than its GS can assimilate, as well as higher levels of adenylylation of GS, which may decrease ammonia assimilation. 2006 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc. 409. Significant pathogens isolated from surgical site infections at a community hospital in the Midwest - Cantlon C.A., Stemper M.E., Schwan W.R. et al. [C.A. Cantlon, Franciscan Skemp Healthcare, Mayo Health System, La Crosse, United States] - AM. J. INFECT. CONTROL 2006 34 8 ; - summ in ENGL Background: Studies examining the incidence of microorganisms isolated from surgical site infections SSIs ; have been conducted primarily at large academic health care centers. Results from these studies have revealed that methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus MRSA ; has emerged as a significant pathogen in SSIs. Minimal data are available from smaller, community hospitals on the incidence of microorganisms associated with SSIs, particularly the incidence of MRSA in SSIs. Methods: A retrospective study was performed to identify the microorganisms associated with SSIs in patients who underwent class I and II surgeries at a small urban to rural community hospital from January 2003 through December 2004. Results: A total of 10, 672 surgeries was performed, and 89 SSIs were identified. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common pathogen 25.8% ; . Enterobacteriaceae were the second most frequently isolated organisms 12.4% ; , followed by streptococci species 11.2% ; , coagulase-negative staphylococci 10.1% ; , enterococci species 7.9% ; , and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 6.7% ; . MRSA was isolated from 4.5% of the SSIs. Conclusion: We have demonstrated that the spectrum of microorganisms isolated in SSIs at a community hospital is comparable with that reported in studies conducted at large academic health care centers, including the emergence of MRSA as a pathogen in SSIs. This information will guide future infection control initiatives to reduce SSIs. 2006 Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. 410. Effect of bacterial interactions on the spoilage of coldsmoked salmon - Joffraud J.-J., Cardinal M., Cornet J. et al. [J.-J. Joffraud, D partement Sciences et Techniques Alimentaires e Marines, IFREMER, BP 21105, 44311 Nantes Cedex 3, France] INT. J. FOOD MICROBIOL. 2006 112 1 ; - summ in ENGL Cold-smoked salmon is a lightly preserved fish product in which a mixed microbial flora develops during storage and where the interactive behaviour of micro-organisms may contribute to their growth and spoilage activity. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the bacterial interactions between the main species contaminating the cold-smoked salmon on bacterial growth, chemical and sensory changes, and spoilage. First, Carnobacterium piscicola, Photobacterium phosphoreum, Lactobacillus sakei, Vibrio sp., Brochothrix thermosphacta and Serratia liquefaciens-like were inoculated as pure cultures on sterile cold-smoked salmon. All bacterial species grew well; Vibrio sp. was the fastest and L. sakei strains developed very rapidly as well with a high maximum cell density on cold-smoked salmon blocks up to 109 cfu g-1 after 10 days at 8 C ; Based on sensory analysis, Vibrio sp. was identified as non-spoilage bacteria, C. piscicola as very lightly and B. thermosphacta as lightly spoiling. L. sakei and S. liquefacienslike were found to be the most spoiling bacteria. Secondly, C. piscicola and L. sakei, two species frequently occurring in the lactic Section 4 vol 130.2.
The role of the drug trade assumes importance, as India was historically dependent on drug imports when the domestic industry was in a nascent stage. The import of bulk drugs has been considerable and increased during the 1950s and 1960s, as formulations were prepared with basic bulk drugs, mainly by transnational companies. For instance, the import of bulk drugs and formulations registered an upward trend from Rs 13.17 crore in 1963-64 to Rs 37.54 crore in 197374. Nevertheless, export marked a sharp and significant increase during this period from a meagre Rs 2 crore to Rs 37.54 crore, thereby helping to reduce the trade gap in the phar, for instance, spivira.
Model of Induction of Diabetes Mellitus in Rats; Acta Cir. Unfortunately, most consumers are unaware of alloxan and its potentially fatal link to diabetes because these facts are not well publicized, are hidden by FDA approval, and certainly doctors and the food industry are not informing parents that they and their children are being poisoned by white flour containing alloxan. Others were given non-GM soya and a third group was given no soya at all. She found that 36 per cent of the young of the rats fed the modified soya were severely underweight, compared to 6 per cent of the offspring of the other groups. More alarmingly, a staggering 55.6 per cent of those born to mothers on the GM diet perished within three weeks of birth, compared to 9 per cent of the offspring of those fed normal soya, and 6.8 per cent of the young of those given no soya at all. : organicconsumers ge babies010906 148 Malatesta M, Caporaloni C, Rossi L, Battistelli S, Rocchi MBL, Tonucci F, Gazzanelli G 2002 ; Ultrastructural analysis of pancreatic acinar cells from mice fed on genetically modified soybean. Johnson, RN, CDE, International Diabetes Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and colleagues[12] evaluated 206 persons for the microvascular complications of peripheral neuropathy, retinopathy, and nephropathy. On average, subjects had diabetes for approximately 10 years and demonstrated good glucose control hemoglobin A1C 7.3% 1.4% ; . Forty-eight percent of study subjects had microvascular complications, even though they had generally good glycemic control and a relatively short duration of diabetes. Diabetic nephropathy was identified in 20% of the study population; retinopathy was identified in 11%; and symptoms of diabetic peripheral neuropathy were identified in 63%. Diagnosis with a 10-g SemmesWeinstein monofilament only identified 16% of patients with neuropathy. Tiotropium for copdTiotropium formoterol combinationThe parameters in tables are expressed as means and standard error of the mean x SEM ; . Because the assumptions for using parametric tests according to the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test of distribution were not fulfilled, the Wilcoxon test for within-group comparisons was used for statistical analysis and p 0.05 was considered as statistically significant and ursodiol. Furthermore, improvements appear sustained for up to 3 weeks after discontinuing tiotropium. In a randomized, placebo-controlled study involving 187 copd patients, those who received tiotropium showed statistically significant improvements in lung volumes and airflow and could exercise for a longer period of time than those who took placebo and valproic. Propellants Propellants in pMDIs are liquefied compressed gases that are in the gaseous phase at atmospheric pressure, but form liquids when compressed. They are required to be nontoxic, nonflammable, compatible with drugs formulated either as suspensions or solutions, and to have appropriate boiling points and densities.6 To ensure consistent dosing, the vapor pressure must be constant throughout the product's life, and this rules out the use of compressed gases such as carbon dioxide, the pressure of which would decrease as doses were emitted. Chlorofluorocarbons CFCs ; meet the required criteria, and pMDIs have traditionally been formulated with the highly volatile CFC-12 dichlorodifluoromethane ; as the major component. CFC-11 trichlorofluoromethane ; or CFC-114 dichlorotetrafluoroethane ; , which have higher boiling points, may be used to modify the vapor pressure, and to facilitate preparation of the formulation. CFC-12 may be added to the container either at low temperature, before the metering valve is crimped in place cold-filling ; , or via the metering valve after crimping pressurefilling ; . A key property of CFCs is that within a closed container they form a 2-phase liquid and saturated vapor ; system, such that a dynamic equilibrium exists between liquid and vapor phases, giving a constant vapor pressure irrespective of whether the can is full or nearly empty. The vapor pressure inside a pMDI is typically 300 500 kPa. Tiotropium vs ipratropium
Inhaled anticholinergic agents act by causing bronchodilation--due to blockade of acetylcholine released by airway cholinergic nerves--and by reducing the intrinsic vagal tone, which exists in the airways. Ipratropium is the most widely prescribed inhaled anticholinergic agent in the US. The drug has a very short duration of action, no longer than four to six hours. Recently, tiotropium, which is effective for up to 24 hours, has been marketed in the US for treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD ; which does not occur in children ; . In acute exacerbations of asthma, there is some evidence that additional bronchodilator effect is obtained when ipratropium is combined with an inhaled beta2 agonists. This effect has been noted principally in children, but may also occur in adults. However, a recent report did not confirm these observations. In the rare patient who suffers an excessive amount of adverse effects from beta2 agonists, ipratropium may be substituted. As a group, anticholinergic agents have excellent safety profiles. I have a high tolerance to pain medication and this did not even begin to touch my pain and darvon. This tablet is usually taken once or twice a day, depending on your doctors prescription. Pain treatment Chronic-pain treatment was established when we were able to resume the MSF programme in the Murray Town Amputees' Camp in early 2001. The pain clinic was not limited to particular problems, and anyone with pain was able to attend; however, most of those who attended were amputees table 2 ; . The aim was to establish the clinic, train a local community health officer, and let the clinic function for a period, and then reassess. One useful outcome measure was whether such an activity could run with minimum expert input. One of the local staff we employed was at first sceptical of there being a problem with pain, but became convinced otherwise during an early meeting with one of the camp's committees to discuss the planned intervention. One man described in detail the burning, "drawing" stretching ; , and pricking in his elbow stump; he spoke in a loud voice with emphatic gestures and with vocal support from several others in the group. After this experience, the local staff member impressed upon us that there was a real problem here that we must do something about. Consultations were by appointment and patients were given reminders to attend. The information we collected included demographics, pain descriptors, pain scoring, mood, use of prostheses, activities of daily living, and clinical examination. We also asked about other injuries--beatings were common and there were other amputations, including ears figure 2 ; and toes. Assessment of a new patient took approximately one hour; follow-up visits took 15 mins. If treatment had been started, the follow-up consultations were weekly, with the aim of checking for side-effects and repeating key messages as the opportunity arose panel 3 ; . Doses were increased as tolerated on a simple dosage regimen; patients could reach any dose on this regimen. Treatment goals were set in an attempt to avoid unrealistic expectations eg, to be able to sleep at night.
